The Softest Corners of the City
The city always feels a little less harsh after a good rain, doesn't it? The air smells cleaner, and people seem to move with just a bit more kindness. I was on my way back from volunteering at the animal shelter – those kittens are absolute sunshine, you know? They need so much, but they give even more in return.
I spotted him across the street, struggling with an umbrella that had clearly seen better days. A silly little thing to notice, perhaps, but a kindness felt is always remembered. I almost kept walking; my schedule is packed, and truthfully, I hadn't given myself time for…well, for anything unexpected.
But something about the way he was wrestling with it made me pause. It reminded me of my grandfather trying to fix things around the house – stubbornness mixed with a kind heart. I walked over, offered him mine, and before I knew it we were both laughing under its small canopy, sharing stories about clumsy weather and even clumsier beginnings.
He told me he was an architect designing a new park, aiming to create spaces where people could find calm amidst the city’s hustle. And in that moment, shielding him from the drizzle with my umbrella, I thought maybe, just maybe, he already had.
