Here we go…

“Ah, there you are then. Thought you might be.” A little obvious, perhaps, but not too much. It’s been... well, longer than should have been, hasn't it? We haven’t spoken about that for ages, really. Just assumed everyone does, don’t you? The silent agreement to pretend nothing ever quite broke. A glass has merely tilted, never completely fallen. These woollies, though – these knittedties were always so good at holding things together, weren’t they? This one’s rather nice, actually. Not too fussy, feels comfortable enough. Like everything used to.

Now, aren’t we here to talk about that? Or maybe not. Maybe you thought you didn’t want to. That happens sometimes, doesn’t it? Little bit of distance back then, wasn’t there? Always with the scarf pulled tight, shielding yourself off. Beautiful scarf, obviously – hand-knitted by Mum. She would have liked you. Probably still wearing her scent, faintly. Mostly cedarwood, of course – she loved thosecosy nights.

You're staring, aren’t you? Not an overwhelming stare, more like a hesitant one. Like you’ve got something to say, finally. But afraid to risk saying the wrong thing. Well, we all did. Didn’ed we? Let’s not dwell. Just look. Look at the way the light catches in the strands of hair escaping the braid. See the faint trace of dust motes dancing around you. And see the hint of doubt in our eyes, nestled beneath the slight weariness.

It was a lovely house, remember? Before…well, before everything became a little too noisy, a little too bright. Almost forgot how good it felt to be home. So, yeah, look. Aren’t you curious?”
