A slight hesitation in the hand holding the coffee cup, the way the light catches the dust motes dancing around the room – always something to dissect. Not criticism, never truly critical, though. More often than not, a quiet expectation. Did you expect us to be happier, then? Didn’t seem like much trouble at the time, did it?

This posture, comfortable, almost. One footed, of course, ever since that winter. Right leg, naturally. Less effort involved, less chance of falling if things get messy. Though, sometimes you wonder if all these years of standing tall hasn’t hardened us a little. Made us reluctant to admit where the wobble came from.

A sigh escaped earlier, didn’thave? Just a small one, nothing dramatic. But you noticed. Everyone notices, eventually. It wasn't necessarily sadness, was it? Maybe just... weariness. It’s been a long while.

Now look at us, sitting here in the gloom, three years after the last suitcase went, surrounded by furniture bought with a single bank account. And you, staring back, perhaps wondering why we haven't put them both out in the garden yet. Go ahead, keep thinking about it. Isn’t that what you do best?"
