“There,” I murmur, voice a little rougher than usual, not quite a complaint. It hasn’t been a complaint for months, has it? Just…a quietness. Like after the storm, perhaps - but one where the leaves didn't always settle back into place. This wool coat is scratchy tonight, definitely too many years since it was new, reminds us of when things were newer then, doesn’t it? A touch of grey in the texture, mirroring the light filtering through the French doors - always the French doors.
You haven’t said much, really. That’s not entirely surprising. We rarely do these days. Mostly just standing here, isn't there? For weeks, maybe longer – hard to be sure with time, it shifts and drifts. Your hand brushed mine on the way in, almost imperceptibly, wasn’t it? A ghost of warmth against the cool evening air.
We both know about the wine. The half glass left on the table last Thursday, almost forgotten until today. Did you notice it? Well, you weren’t here to say anything about it. Probably busy remembering something else entirely—his cufflinks, perhaps?
Your gaze is…observant. Not critical. More like you’re trying to remember which side to turn. To turn towards the familiar comfort of each other, or away, out onto the street and all the expectations that come with being seen.
It feels like yesterday, sometimes, those easy smiles, the effortless laughter. Now, it’,s more like this – a slight tilt of the head, a flicker of recognition in your eyes. And us, sitting here in this beautiful, slightly cluttered room, wondering if we should finally speak up. If we dare.”
