Here goes…

“There. That’s a bit too much light catching in your eye then, isn’t it?” We say it casually, almost without thinking, don’t we? A slight tilt of the head, the crinkling near one corner of our mouth when you do. It’s been a while since anyone noticed, really. Noticed this. These creases here, around the eyes, earned over years of quietly holding things back. This particular shade of rose in the lipstick, purchased for rather less than its original price tag after all.

It wasn’t always this silent, was it? Remembered laughter, definitely. The way he used to wrinkle his nose when we drank too much wine. Simple things. Comfortable things. Before the rain came, naturally. Everyone remembers the rain. How it soaked through everything – not just the tweed jacket, though that did get a good thrashing there, didn'd it? More likely the feeling.

You haven' – well, you’ve been watching. For ages, actually. Since the announcement, of course. They said it was amicable. Amicable for everyone but us, probably. We shouldn’t have lingered quite so long in the garden, should we? Too many roses blooming, too little courage to prune them.

Now look at you. Slightly hesitant. Like you weren't entirely sure if you were invited, which, of course, is true. It's okay. Let yourself relax a little. Breathe. Just enough to notice the dust motes dancing in the sunlight. And maybe, just maybe, remember why those simple days felt perfect.”

We’re smiling at you, aren’t we? A small, hopeful smile. Now, go ahead, take a closer look…”

To help us narrow down the details & refine the monologue, let us know:

  • What sort of atmosphere/feel does the photo evoke most strongly? (e.g., melancholic, wistful, resilient...)
  • Which element of the visuals feels most important to highlight? (The scarf? The chair?)
  • And what kind of person would you like us to imagine is in the audience? (A long lost lover? A photographer?")
