Sunlight through the leaves, coffee cupines, and that perfect oversized sweater – feeling like this most days! A little bit cozy, a whole lot of magic. Letting ourselves get lost in the simple moments...
The wool feels scratchy tonight, doesn’t it? Not unpleasant, not exactly. Just… familiar. Like a well-worn habit, perhaps, one we didn't always agree was comfortable. See the way the cable knit hugs tight around the calves - little bit too much sometimes, don’t think we ever said anything about it. It's been years since he asked, hasn’t it? Years of quiet evenings like these, punctuated by the occasional clink of wine glasses and a silence so thick you could almost taste the dust motes dancing in the candlelight.
And you were staring, weren’t we? At the collar of the shirt, probably. A perfectly acceptable thing, really, dark blue, nice fabric. Less dramatic than the scarf, anyway – cashmere, of course, naturally. Had to be cashmere. Always did love a good bargain with ourselves, didn't we?
You’re watching us watch, aren’t we? The Photographer. Ever observant, never intrusive—or so he thought. More likely to notice the slight furrow of the brow, the way the light catches the silver ring on our finger. Almost forgot all about the fight, then. Or maybe not. Remembered the scent of rain, aftershave...and her perfume.
It wasn't her fault, of course. We knew that, logically. Too many memories for one wardrobe rack, perhaps. So simple, hadn’’t we? Such effortless grace until the cracks started showing. And those cracks widened over time, didn’t they?
Now, look at you again. Slightly apprehensive, most likely. A flicker of hope tucked beneath the skepticism. That’s okay. Let it show. Maybe, just maybe, if we shift slightly closer, adjust the sleeve, allow a hint more vulnerability to peek through, remember that feeling when everything felt easy…
What do you say?”
Notes:
- We tried to capture a sense of contained emotion - the comfort and familiarity mixed with lingering sadness/doubt.
- Lots of detail to ground the reader in the scene and the character’s world.
- A gentle challenge to the viewer ("what do you say?") - encouraging them to engage with the story being told.
Let us know what you think and if you'd like us to refine it further! Now, off to find the perfect lighting! 😊
