“There. That’s the one.” It always was, wasn’t it? The slight tilt of the hand, ever since - well, ever since he left. Not that he didn’t leave us plenty to miss, all those years ago. Now you’re here, aren’t you? A little hesitant, naturally. Like everyone usually is these days. Probably remembering the way things used to be, too much light then, not enough rain now. These woolens wereches, though, weren’t they? A bit fussy for autumn perhaps, but who cares about that? The cable knit feels good against the skin, keeps out the chill, even if it’s mostly in our heads.

We haven't spoken in...well, longer than we care to admit, really. Justed eyes lately, when the cats nap, or when the coffee’s hot. And there, isn't there, Marmalade? Purring away oblivious, as usual. You hadn't noticed the trace of wine on your chin, of course. Happens often, doesn’t it? That little smudge around your mouth, like a memory – ours. Not quite painful, more a quiet ache.

You’ve been staring, you know. At the angle of my sleeve, probably. Annoyed, maybe? Or perhaps a flicker of recognition? Don't look so guilty – it’s only natural to wonder where the time went. We certainly haven'ed put ourselves off much, had we? No, no, don't say that. Here, turn your head slightly…yes, that’s it. There. Now, smile. For once. It hasn't felt perfect, has it? But today did, almost. Almost. Let’s see if you remember which side to stand on."
