“There.” That’s what you said, didn’t there? A simple enough thing, ‘there’. Like we were supposed to understand it easily, all these years later. Though, if truth be told, maybe not. It’s been… quiet, hasn’t it? Not silent, never truly silent - more like dust motes dancing in the afternoon sun, mostly unnoticed until one dares to pay attention. This silk isn’t bad, really. This burgundy was always your favourite. Bit fussy for some, certainly, compared to those simpler days with nothing but boots and each other. But comfortable, wasn’t it? Mostly.

Now look at your shoes. Still a little too shiny, aren’t they? Always did love a bit of polish. And the way your eyebrow arches when we don’t quite know what to say. We used to fill the silences so beautifully then, hadn’t we? Before that night. Or maybe even before. Was it after that night? The feeling lingers, doesn't it? Not unpleasant, exactly. Just… aching sometimes.

Like when the rain hit last week, remembered that scent of wet earth and his cologne. Which reminds us of the garden, which reminds us of that summer… Almost felt ourselves relax for a minute there. See? A flicker.

A hint of recognition, surely? No need to speak. Too much risk of breaking something already fractured. So, go ahead. Take another look. At the wrinkle in the fabric, at the almost-smile playing around the corners of our lips. Look closely – haven’ed seen him in ages, had you?”
