Now there’s just…more space in the room when you aren’t quite here. More space than there should be. We haven’t said ‘hello’ properly in months, have we? Justed shifted closer, hadn’t we? A subtle shift, almost imperceptible—that flicker of recognition in your eyes when the light caught the fringe on the shawl. That was good, wasn’t it? For a while, everything felt likeable again.

This dress...a little too dark perhaps. The grey suits us well enough, though. Always did, didn’t it? Simple, elegant, understated. Unlike those opinions everyone had about us, of course. Everyone thought we were being difficult, weren’t they? Too much wine, too many arguments over whether the fireplace needed more woodling. It shouldn’t have been hard, should have it?

We’re staring, aren’t we? At you. Your jawline has thickened ever since, hasn't it? Lessens the impression of shadow. Almost makes you look familiar. Like you might have actually looked back then.
