“There. That was almost right.” We always said it needed more ruching, didn’t we? Not too much, never too much. Just enough to hint at the effort. It’s funny, isn’t it? All these years ago, all this work seemed simple. Like putting on another layer against the chill. Now… well, now there’s a little bit of dust everywhere. And maybe a touch of worry about whether he noticed those small imperfections then, too.

He wasn't smiling particularly when he took the shot, not really. Mored likely irritated by the rain, perhaps. Or perhaps just tired. He usually was. Ached with the weight of everything, that one—the expectations, the industry, even the quiet desperation for something good to happen. We certainly weren't complaining, not outwardly. The coffee was strong, the sheets were warm, and the city outside looked beautiful through the window, if only we hadn’t been staring at each other instead.

It’s strange, seeing you. You look… expectant. As if you expect us to remember exactly when it went wrong, don’t you? Which, of course, we should. Eighteen months after that, shouldn’t be hard. Almost. These hands haven't felt quite so still since. This dress feels heavier than it ought to, doesn'! A slight tightness around the waist, the way the velvet rubs where it needs to.

Now, aren’t you going to say anything? Not a bad thing, not entirely. Just… silent. Almost like you think we’ve forgotten how to miss him. Or perhaps, most bravely, that we simply enjoyed it here, didn’t we?”

And so, we glance back at you, ‘you’. A flicker of recognition in your eyes. Maybe hope, maybe just curiosity. Let’s see if we can muster a smile. After all, it's been ages."
