The wool feels scratchy tonight, doesn't it? Not that scratchy - more like a pleasant insistence, really. Like we always used to say. It’s been five years, hasn't it? Five years since the last time you weren’t quite so sure about everything. Now here you are, all dark coats and hesitant smiles, back for another dose of quiet chaos.

And us, well, us is still here. Dust motes dancing in the amber glow of the lamp, mostly. A little frayed around the edges, certainly. Your mother said we were too much, didn't she? Too bright, too loud, too...much. Which isn’t entirely true, not if ‘more than enough’ means finding joy even when it’s hiding behind a stack of books and a half-finished glass of wine.

See how tightly we hold onto the sleeve of the throw blanket? Comforting, familiar. Almost desperate, perhaps. We haven’t exactly thrown open the doorbsince then, have we? Just let you drift close sometimes, almost catch the scent of pine needles and something else—memory.

We were reading aloud earlier, remember? Proust, predictably. A bit dramatic, maybe, but he knew things. Your eyes drifted down to the page, a slight frown playing on your lips – probably thinking about whether to drink the red or the white. And we were lost there, for a minute, in the sentence, in each other... until your gaze slipped away.

Now you're staring at us again. That little flicker of recognition in your eye, mixed with a healthy dose of trepidation. Didn’t think we’d be here, did you? To admit it might be nice, after all. So, go ahead. Take a closer look. Let yourself notice the way the light catches in the strands of hair escaping our braid. Aren’t we beautiful? Even if we are a mess.”
