(The cashmere feels good tonight, doesn't it? A little worn around the edges, like us – not necessarily a bad thing. It hasn’t felt quite so…still for a while.)
“There.” That’s what you said, didn’t there? Just ‘there’. Not too much to ask, really. Nothing dramatic needed, always. We never needed anything too much, did we? Just a flicker of acknowledgement, usually. A slight upturn of the lips when you noticed the way the light caught in the silver ring on your finger all those years ago. We liked the light. Remember the summer by the lake? The rain almost every night, but still – the water was shimmering…”
But then came the arguments. Always about something small, wasn't there? Your boots being left by the door, my penchant for late nights reading, her favourite painting hung a bit crookedly. Small things, easily forgotten, except for the silences that followed. Silences thicker than these perfectly draped sleeves.
You haven't been many times since. Years, perhaps. Or only five. Feels longer sometimes, doesn't it? Like time itself has taken its toll, a subtle fraying at the edge of everything. Look at your shoes – sensible, definitely sensible. No risk of catching them, afterall.
Now you're here, staring, aren’t you? A hint of curiosity in your eyes, maybe even a touch of trepidation. Not entirely sure why you’re here, are you? Perhaps afraid of hearing the truth – that we both knew it could go either way, this acceptance, this comfortable distance. Maybe you expected a more obvious reaction, some grand gesture. But mostly, we’ve learned to keep things under wraps.
So, look closer. See the ghost of a smile playing on our lips. Feel the warmth of the firelight reflecting off the dust motes dancing in the gloom. And don't be shy. After all, we've been waiting."
Notes:
- This one leans into the melancholy with a hint of hopefulness.
- It'scheskyed the setting, which helps create atmosphere.
- Lots of opportunity to connect it back to the visual – the grey cardigan, the watchful gaze, etc.!
