The wool feels scratchy tonight, doesn’t it? Not unpleasant, not entirely - it used to be your favourite scarf, remember, cashmere blend, bought for us after that disastrous Christmas with Aunt Mildred. This has been years, hasn’t it? Five, maybe six? The dust motes haven’t had much time to settle since then. They’re still a little expectant, those ones.

And there you were, all angles and hesitant smiles when you said you wanted to come back. A bit wary, perhaps. Always were, weren’t you? Like you thought we might actually enjoy it out here, away from the comfortable quiet of routine. Which, admittedly, was often too much comfort. Or so we told ourselves.

Now, look at your shoes – a touch scuffed, naturally. Thatched off over London cobblestones, no doubt. Simple, though. Classic. Just like them – those memories. We both know about them, don’t we? About the way the light caught your hair during that summer rain, the almost silent agreement between us whenever the wine glass emptied a little too quickly.

We didn'ed talk much today, did we? Just nodded politely when mother mentioned the garden. Silently agreed that her roses hadn’t looked quite so bad. But now...now you’re here. Staring, aren't you? Probably wondering why we don’t always smile. Maybe we’re afraid. Afraid of admitting things got good, weren't we? Too easy, perhaps, once we stopped fighting so hard.

So, go ahead. Look at us. It’s alright to notice the slight tightness around our mouths, the flicker of something warm beneath the surface of the stillness. Let yourself think about it. And try not to blink, will you? We haven’t really been noticed properly in ages.”

— Now, show us that gaze…

How do you think it went? Do you want us to tweak anything or give it another shot? 😊

Let us know!

(Of course, the real fun is imagining which one of us is wearing the coat!)
