Here goes...

“Right then.” That’s probably what you were thinking, wasn't it? ‘Right then,’ for the last time, perhaps, about the way the coffee always gets cold by eleven. It’s been nearly ten years. Ten years since the sound of which had to be silenced - not our fault entirely, of course. More her choice. Lessens to bear, those. We haven't worn these wool trousers since, well, she left. They still smell faintly of rain and woodsmoke, even if ours does. A good thing too. Noted them, did you? The subtle crease where the fabric has settled over time, like memories themselves.

Your eyes are here, aren’t they? Watching us. Nothing dramatic, nothing demanding. Just… observing. Like you always did. Bit too much sometimes, didn’t mean to think so. We never said. Too many silences anyway. Remember those? The comfortable ones, mostly. Though maybe that was just denial.

This shawl, though. Your grandmother’s, isn't it? Soft merino, always smelled of lavender and something vaguely familiar – hers. Funny, isn’t it? How everything does. This dress hasn’t felt quite right without it for ages, although tonight it feels almost easy, doesn't it? Almost. A little less hesitant than yesterday, when the cat brushed against your leg. Which, admittedly, most days feels like a small victory.

It's funny, really. All this effort to look serene. To appear unfazed. As if being alone, wrapped up in a memory, nestled into our routine, isn’—t the natural order of things. But there’s a flicker, isn't there? In your gaze. A hint of guilt, perhaps? Or maybe recognition. Maybe hope.

So, go ahead. Look. Let yourself get close enough that you can see the dust motes dancing in the light. And don’t blink, for goodness sake. Not too afraid, are you?”
