“Always the sound of rain, isn’t it?” It's not said aloud, not really. More a feeling that drifts into the quietness, nestled amongst the muted green of these ferns, reflected in the glass. We haven’t named them, not consciously. Just always been here, hasn’t there? These plants, and the dampness, the comforting weight of the world outside, and inside too, for so long.

Your shoes aren’tedre than we remembered. A little worn, definitely scuffed – he wasn’t one for fussing much. That was his thing, though, wasn’t it? Not fussing. Everything had to be… ordered. Like the way he liked his coffee, black, no sugar. And those books piled high on the table, almost touching the fireplace, radiating warmth until then – until then.

Now, just this occasional flicker of recognition when the light catches your cheekbone, exactly as it does now.

This sweater, comfortable, familiar. The wool feels good against our skin, even if it’s a bit rumpled after a long week spent mostly indoors, watching the world go by through the windows. A small smile tugged at our lips yesterday – a genuine one, don’tcha think? Before the sigh, before the turn of the head, before the silent agreement to keep things perfectly still.

It’s nice, being looked at. Familiar, certainly. Almost reassuring. Were you wondering why we didn’t move out? Too many memories here, probably. Or maybe, just maybe, we were afraid of getting wet.”
