“There,” we said, didn’t we? A little too casually, perhaps. Like nothing much had changed since…well, not nothing, exactly. Just ten years ago when he last bothered to notice the way the afternoon light caught in the threads of this wool. Ten years of which felt like a perfectly acceptable lifetime spent happily lost amongst books and tea cups, until now. And him, back for sure enough – those eyes, still a touch skeptical, though the twinkle hasn’t quite faded yet.
He always did find us a bit intimidating, didn’t he? Not wrong, certainly, but never really here. This cardigan has seen its fair share of quiet evenings, that’s true, but sometimes feels more about keeping the chill away than any warmth within ourselves. It’s comfortable, undeniably. That cable knit was Mother’s favorite.
It’s funny, isn’t it? The way you look at us now. Less inclined to distraction then, less willing to turn away from the obvious messiness of things. Maybe that’s why we let ourselves settle into such a pleasant stillness. We weren't fighting hard, not usually. More like...expecting. Expecting a little flicker, a hint of recognition.
Now, if only we could work out if that's actually there today. Or if it'd simply be another silent evening, almost welcomed after all these years. Almost.”
