“There.” That’s usually when it starts to fray, isn't it? The edges of everything. Like these linen trousers – perfectly good, weren’t them? A muted teal, comfortable even - but today, a little too much evidence of yesterday’s dinner, don’t you think? Just a subtle crease near the cuff, almost invisible unless you were paying attention. We always did pay attention, didn’t we? Or so we thought.

Now, there’s that eyebrow raise. Not quite critical, not yet. More... hesitant acceptance. It was a delicious risotto last night, wasn’t it? Almost perfect, if only he hadn’t insisted on those damn mushrooms. Always with the vegetables. He liked thingseduced, anyway. And us, we were more than happy to oblige. For years.

This coat has seen its fair share of autumns, hasn't it? Cashmere, naturally. Bit fussy for some days, certainly, compared to the practicality of the boots – sturdy, reliable, haven’t they? Though sometimes, the warmth feels a bit too secure, doesn’t it? Too many layers.

You’re staring, aren’ing you? Not overtly, nothing dramatic. Just a slight tightening around the eyes, which is nice. Means you remember. Remember the way the light used to catch his hair, the scent of woodsmoke after, well, after everything. Before the quiet started. Before it felt like a performance.

He said something about needing space, weeks ago. Said it gently, of course. Like ‘space’ wasn’t really about us, just about him. But still...

So, here we are. Watching each other, perhaps. Waiting. Perhaps hoping. And maybe, just maybe, feeling brave enough to let go of the doubt. Let go of the expectation that he will do all the work this time.
