“The cable knit isn’t that bad, is it?” I murmur, more to ourselves than anything. The wool smells faintly of rain and woodsmoke - yours, mostly, of course. It has been nearly ten years since you last visited, though it feels longer than that sometimes. Ten years since the argument, really. A quiet one, for a while there—a slow simmer rather than an explosion – until suddenly not. Now here you are, standing in the kitchen, all shadows and familiar angles. Not quite expecting you, perhaps. That’s why the mug is lukewarm, still holding traces of chamomile, probably left too long after that little bit of a fit about the fern.

Notice the way your hand restsches behind your knee. Doesn't look so daunting up close, does it? Just… contained. Like a held breath. We were watching the rain yesterday, didn’t realize it was raining inside us then either. Probably did.

This dress – navy, obviously practical, definitely not frivolous – which is good. Needed something solid to hold onto, considering. Your gaze drifts back to ours, doesn' of course. Slight squinting, maybe a flicker of surprise. See? Almost casual. Which is nice, when it happens. More often than not, these days, anyway.

A sigh escaped earlier, didn’t it? Didn’t notice? Well, most likely not. Were you thinking of those summer nights by the lake? Or maybe just wondering if the dog would remember us. This feeling, though, hasn’t shifted much, has it? Maybe a touch hesitant. Maybe a hint of hope.

Now, don’t stand there staring. Too obvious. Just a gentle shift of weight, a slight turn of the chin towards you…”
