"The cable knit feels good tonight, doesn’t it? Not too prickly, not too soft. Just…right. It usually is - these things always were, didn't they? A little bit rumpled, definitely comfortable. Like us, perhaps. A year ago today, maybe, or was it twelve months before? Doesn't matter really. Time does tend to blur around edges when there isn't much noise."

“Your eyes are curious, aren't they? That’s nice. We haven't been so keen to admit doubt for a while.” She shifts her weight slightly, the slight rustle of the wooline a quiet sound in the low hum of the city outside. "Noticed them, though. The way they used to drift off sometimes, into those distant landscapes, back then. Into the wine glasses, mostly. Or the firelight.”

“We weren’t always sure if it was him or the drink. Usually thought it was him. Always was. Remembered that summer in Tuscany? Those sunflowers…” A small smile plays about the corners of her mouth, almost hidden by the shadows cast by her dark lashes. “They did seem brighter than everything else, didn’, didn’t they?”

She tilts her head subtly, turning more towards the camera - yours - a hint of vulnerability in the tilt. “Almost forgot to notice the dust motes dancing in the light. Almost forgotten the feeling of his hand against ours.”

There’s a pause. Silence, certainly, but not an uncomfortable one. More like a hesitant question hanging in the air. “So,” she says finally, voice softer now, lessens the risk of a loud word. “What do you think?" — Our gaze locks, a flicker of recognition passing through both pairs of eyes. ”Did he ever truly leave?"
