The wool feels scratchy tonight, doesn’t it? Not an awful scratch, not usually - more like memory itself, a bit rough around the edges but familiar all the same. It’s been a while since anyone noticed, really. Or if they did, they didn’t quiteise the point. These boots, though, these green ones – you notice those, don’t you? A stubborn sort of grace to them, despite the mud tracked in last week. We hadn't expected much when you said you might be, had we? Just a quiet evening, a glass of Burgundy, enough to drown out the ghosts for a few hours.

It was his favorite bottle, wasn’t it? The way he always tilted his head when he took a sip. Like everything was interesting, except us noticing. We used to catch each other then. Used to know exactly which hand to reach for without having to ask. Now...now there's mostly just this.”

(A slight turn of the chin, eyes narrowed ever so slightly, taking in your face).

You haven’t smiled properly in ages, have you? More of a flicker, like a dying ember. Almost afraid of admitting it yourself. As if acknowledging anything could be too risky. Too bright. Too hopeful. Remember the light? Before the rain came.

We weren't perfect, of course. Never were. Always a spark about to extinguish, a small argument simmering beneath the surface. But it felt good, didn’t it? That feeling, even when it hurt. So why did it fade? Was it our fault?

Let’ed look at you, then. Don't avert your gaze completely. Just one hint of recognition. One acknowledgement that perhaps, just possibly, things aren’t entirely bleak. Afterall, isn’t that what brought you here? To find out."
