The wool is scratchy tonight, isn’t it? Not that bad, not usually - cashmere, really, though sometimes it feels more like bundled-up resentment. A little bitish to admit, don’t think about that. It’s been years, hasn’t it? Since the last time you looked less certain than you do now. That flicker when Dad died, remembered it well, didn't you? Just for a second, a perfectly acceptable amount of grief, nothing too dramatic.

We were good then, weren't we? Before everything, before the husband, before the quiet settled into something resembling comfort. Now there’s just this…silence, always this delicious, gentle silence. Like after the wine has gone down nicely, but without quite so much merriment.

Your eyes are a bit wide today, aren’t they? Like you expected us to be fighting, perhaps. We never did fight, not really. More like drifted apart, slowly drifting until we were comfortable with each other’s absence. Still, doesn’t mean we liked it, does it?

See the way your hand rests on the table leg? Nervous habit, most likely. Always was a touch easily flustered by us women. Or maybe it’s the memory of him, lingering around those edges. The scent of his cologne, the weight of his coat.

Don’t stare too hard. We’re not entirely sure why you’ve come back either. Perhaps you missed the light reflecting off the dust motes in the afternoon sun. Maybe you just wanted reassurance that we haven',t completely forgotten about you.
