Here goes…

The cable knit feels scratchy tonight, doesn’t it? Not an unpleasant scratch, not really - more like a memory, sometimes sharp, often softened by time. Like the wool itself. It’s been a while since anyone noticed that, hasn’t it? Just you. Specifically your eyes, which were always good for noticing things, even when he wasn’t around to see them. He used to grumble about the grey scarf, said it clashed with everything, but you never did – you simply tucked it deeper into the collar every time.

That was before, wasn't it? Before the quiet started. Before the tea cups got put away without a trace left behind. The clock stopped ticking three years ago, didn’t it? Or maybe five – hard to be certain these days. We tend to forget those kinds of measurements.

Now, here you are. A little hesitant, aren’t you? That slight upturn of the lips, trying to hide the surprise. Didn’t expect us back, perhaps? It has been a while. Maybe too long. We weren’t terrible, were we? Not disastrously bad. More...muted. Likeed it mostly, muted. Comforting, certainly. But sometimes, hadn’t you felt a touch of coldness yourself?

See? This dress, well, it’s a bit rumpled, isn’taway. Nothing to do with him, obviously – probably just the way we fell off the bed last Thursday. Still, it’s nice to feel something other than perfectly acceptable indifference.

So look. Don’t stare too much, though. Too obvious, wouldn’t want to scare us off again. Just keep watching. And smile, eventually. It won’t hurt, unless you remember exactly what went wrong.”
