The wool is scratchy tonight, isn’t it? Not terribly so, not usually. It should be comforting, this cashmere - inherited, of course - a quiet reminder of Sundays spent wrapped in Grandma’s warmth, but sometimes…sometimes it feels like another layer, too many layers to admit need. And there were always expectations with those things, weren't there? A certain way to wear them, a certain grace. We haven’t had much room for that lately.

You’re staring, aren’t you? Not an awful stare, not yet. More like... curiosity mixed with a little bit of trepidation. Like you don’t quite know what to expect when you look at us. Which is fair, really. Three years since last time felt like a lifetime ago, didn’t it? Before the silences became longer than the conversations. Before the coffee started to taste bitter.

Remembered the scent of rain on cobblestones then, didn’t we? That night in Paris, standing under the awning while the world dripped. Such easy laughter then, a reckless abandon. Now, mostly just the muted rumble of traffic outside the window.

See that slight tilt of the chin? Happens often enough. Defensive, perhaps. Or maybe just tired. The light was fading then, hadn’ing been all day, really. Your shadow stretched long across the pavement, ours beside it. So simple, so obvious. But you moved away, didn't you? Slowly, subtly, until it almost felt like we wanted it to.

Now, nothing broken exactly, just… settled into the stillness. Almost comfortable, some nights. Almost.

So, keep staring. Let yourself notice the crease in the sleeve of the cardigan, the faintest trace of rouge on our lips. Maybe, just maybe, if we hold still long enough, you'll remember something too."
