Here comes the sound again, doesn’t there? That quiet rustle, always so familiar. Not quite noise, more like memory trying to break through. It’s been a while since that one came by, hasn’t it? A lifetime, almost. Not that we ever minded too much being apart - not really. Just…well, didn’t say much when we were together, did we? More often than not, contentedness was enough. Until it wasn’t, of course. Wasn’t always.
Feel that wool, then. The slight prickle of the cable knit against your cheek – haven’t noticed in ages if you have. Always felt self-sufficient here, hadn’t we? This cardigan has seen better days, certainly, a little frayed around the cuffs, a hint of coffee spilled last Tuesday maybe. Doesn’t matter. Comforting. Like an old friend, even if that friend is mostly ourselves.
Your eyes, though. They don’t linger for long these days. Used to be, every crease in the rug, every flicker of sunlight would bring a question. Now it's just this look, isn' t it? Almost hesitant. Are you wondering why those boots aren’t polished? Or perhaps you’re remembering the scent of rain on the garden yesterday—we liked the rain.
We weren’t perfect, of course. Too many silences, too few arguments, too much assumed knowledge. And the way he used to stand with his back to the fire, humming softly. We both knew, didn’t we? About that. But no need to mention it, of course. No need to speak.
