Here we are then. Not quite here, more like suspended. Like one of those gauzy scarves, draped over everything, but never really clinging. It’s been nearly ten years, hasn't it? Ten years since the last time you asked if we were still laughing too hard.

This woollen cardigan…it smells faintly of woodsmoke and stubbornness. Always had a bit of both, didn't we? This knit was Mum’s - she said we looked like little bobbles, all bundled up against the world. Which wasn’t always such a bad thing. Often felt like the world out there was a little too bright, a little too loud sometimes. These boots...well, these haven't moved much either, actually. Comfortable shoes for quiet defiance, mostly. Dark brown leather, sturdy enough, even when things weren’t.

You're not smiling, exactly. More like observing, aren't you? A slight furrowed brow, almost a hint of bemusement. As if all this rumbling around inside us—all the questions, the guilt, the ghosts of good times —is rather amusing to watch. And perhaps it is. Perhaps it should be.

Remember the rain that summer? The way the leaves smelled after? We stood under the awning outside the bookshop, mugs of hot chocolate warming our hands, and thought that maybe, just maybe, everything would be alright. Didn’t think it could end here, did we? Not without a fight.

Now look at you. Looking back. Silent, except for the gentle click of the camera lens, which isn’t so different than a heartbeat, really. Just another tick.

So, what do you see? Do you remember the feeling of being close? Or is that just the cashmere of this scarf, whispering in your ear now. Let’s hope so. Because frankly, a little warmth wouldn't hurt. Wouldn’t it?”
