The cable knit feels scratchy tonight, doesn’t it? Not unpleasant – nothing ever truly is, really - but definitely there. A gentle reminder, perhaps, of the way things used to be smoother, less... deliberate. It was always so effortless with him, wasn’t it? Now, it’s more like this – a slight adjustment every time, a little bit of effort required. Like these boots, for instance. Classic, obviously. Always were. But a touch too much polish sometimes, don’t you think? We’re not entirely sure about that lately.

We haven’t said anything obvious, of course. Just sat here, dark outside the window, listening to the rain – which never seems to stop, either. It should, shouldn’t it? Feels almost like your fault, maybe. Not that anyone mentioned, just… a feeling.

You’re staring, aren’t you? That slightly quizzical gaze, familiar enough to be comfortable, yetting for an answer after all these years. Well, here’es one: you look a little lost yourself. Slightly wary, certainly. Remembered that freckle by the corner of your mouth – hadn’t noticed it fading quite so much.

That photograph hung above the fireplace last week, didn't it? The summer one. Everyone thought it was happiness, those bright smiles, sun-drenched faces...but everyone knows the truth, doesn't she? Or did she?

Well, let’s not overthink it. Just relax. Relax your shoulders, ease off a fraction. He hasn’t been back for ages, has he? Maybe you’ve finally started to accept that.
