It feels… tight here, doesn’t it? Not unpleasant, not exactly. Just…contained for far too long. These boots aren't completely averse to being worn out, though the leather has softened nicely over the years, hasn't it? A hint of well-worn comfort against the cold, grey today. The cable knit isn't terribly fussy, either. Simple merino wool, nothing pretentious, which is good. We don't need pretension. Mostly.

Of course, you do look a bit rumpled. Thatched hair, little trace of sleep stilling those dark eyes – almost makes you seem approachable again after all these years. Like you didn’t always know about the quietness, then. It was never really that silent, was it? More like a muted hum, easily drowned out by the city if you weren’t careful.

We haven’t spoken much since the gallery showing, naturally. Everyone assumed it was amicable, of course. The husband approved – pragmatic man, even if he did lack a certain spark. But everyone assumes so many things, don’t they? Even ourselves.

That slight tightening around your mouth when you shifted your weight earlier, perhaps a flicker of recognition. Did you remember the scent of woodsmoke, maybe? Or was it just the coffee? Probably the coffee.

And here we are, standing on the edge of something, then. Didn’ t quite dare reach out, did we? Too much risk of admitting that yes, sometimes, the silence can be a touch lonely. Not that we needed you to, necessarily. Just… nice to see you, wouldn’t lie. So, sit down then. Bit chilly, shouldn't it? Let us try to banish the feeling that everything needs to be perfectly poised, tonight.”
