Sunlight through the leaves and that perfect cozy knit – feeling like this for every day! A little bit of quiet today, just us and our favorite corner of the world. Doesn’t get much better than this.....
(The wool of the cardigan feels particularly scratchy tonight, doesn't it?) That was probably too much Earl Grey – always overdone it with the Earl Grey. It’s funny, isn’t it? How easily we drifted here, to this corner of the garden, amidst the roses that haven’t bothered to bloom all summer. Not that funny, not really. Just… familiar.
You’re standing there, aren’t you? A little awkwardly, perhaps. Like you used to, when you weren’t quite sure if you were welcome. Or maybe you don't think we even noticed. We hadn't been noticing much of anything for years, had we? Excepting each other, mostly, silently. The way we did.
See those hands? They look a bit stiff today, yours. Always liked them, though. Big hands, strong hands. Used to be able to hold everything together, didn't we? At least, that’s what we told ourselves. Now...now it’s more about the space between us than the actual holding.
That frown line by your mouth - it hasn'tched itself out completely, has it? Still a hint of that smile, sometimes, buried beneath the dust. Like after a good rain, remember? When the leaves smelled green and sharp and new, and for one perfect afternoon, nothing felt so complicated as choosing which rose to name your daughter.
It wasn’ed obvious, then, did it? Not immediately. Maybe we both knew, deep down. It’s interesting, isn’t it, how often things can be hidden in plain sight. So, go ahead. Take a closer look at us. Isn't it time to admit it? Doesn’t it?”
Now, show us the picture! Let’s know what you thought.
Let us know what you thought of the monologue! Do you want us to refine it further, or try another scene? 😊
