“There. That’s better.” It’s been a while since we heard that, hasn’t it? Not much of a time, really - five years feels almost…reasonable, doesn’t it? Almost. The wool is scratchy tonight, of course. Always was with your mother’s cardigans. A little too warm, always a bit too many layers. Not wrong, not ever wrong, just…contained. Like everything about us used to be. Before the rain started, anyway. Before he argued over the fernlings.

You’re staring, aren’t you? Not quite sure why, perhaps. Probably shouldn’t. We don’t usually do much standing around wondering these days. More often than not, there’s a comfortable quietness – a silent agreement that nothing needs saying. Excepted for maybe when the cat sneezes, then suddenly everyone has an opinion.

This dress. Dark blue, simple, felt expensive once. Now it feels familiar, like skin worn smooth by years of wearing. And the shoes! These boots were your favourite, weren’t they? They haven’t seen much action lately. Justing feeling a little dusty ourselves, perhaps.

That look on your face, though. A hint of hesitation. Are you remembering something? Or just noticing the way the light catches the silver in your hair? Still beautiful, isn’t it? Even if it does show where the children took their toll.

Remember that summer? By the sea? When he forgot to pack the towel? Ah well, didn’t matter. Nothing did, did it? Almost.

Let’s not think about that now. Let’s just stand here, then, shall we? Between the shadows and the memory, the warmth and the chill. Just you and us. Go ahead. Take another breath. There's no rush."
