The wool is scratchy tonight, isn't it? Not horribly so, not usually. It’s our wool, used to be anyway. Feels familiar, though - a little worn around the edges, much like… well, everything. Looked at closely, you can see the dust motes dancing in those beams of light filtering through the curtains, haven't you? Always did love a good gloom.

And you’re standing there, aren’t we? A bit hesitant, perhaps. Like you were when last you visited. Seven years ago, maybe? Or was it eight? Doesn’t matter really, does it? The details always blurred then too. Thatched the memory with a quietness of our own making, didn't we? A perfectly acceptable silence for quite some time. Though sometimes, during a particularly dramatic thunderstorm, you could hear it – the echo of a laugh, a sigh, a touch missed.

We weren't shouting, never shouted. Just drifting, wasn’t there? Two ships passing without a ripple, until one bumped gently against the shore, and suddenly, everyone expected something more than stillness. Something beyond the hearth. And then came the arguing about whether it was cold enough. Silly thing, the soul. So easy to freeze it, if only we’d dared to turn up the heat.

See that furrow in our brow? We’ve been working on that all evening. Trying not to look too certain of ourselves, after all. Too many expectations hanging heavy in these rooms, don’,t you think? Mostly ours. Did we put us off? Maybe it's obvious, this slight tightening around the eyes - hasn’t been since yesterday, has it?

Now, give us a smile, then. A small one. No need to overdo it. Just acknowledge us. Just remember. Are you sure you want to?
