(The photo shows a woman, mid-thirties perhaps, sitting comfortably but not quite relaxed on a low wooden stool. She’s wearing an oversized, perfectly worn cashmere cardigan - cream coloured, naturally - over a simple white silk blouse. The sleeves roll almost lazily to her elbows. A half-empty glass of red wine sitsleslty on the stool beside her, within reach. Her gaze is fixed outwards, onto… you.)

“There. That’s better.” It’s always good to hear your voice, isn’t it? Though we haven’t spoken inages, hasn’t it felt like years. Like so many other times when one of them did, actually. It was his choice last time, wasn’t it? To come back for Christmas. Not our Christmas anymore, really, more ours than others. He looks a little hesitant today, doesn’t he? That slight turn of the lip when he thinks no one's noticing. Probably thinking about the dog then, maybe the garden. Doesn't seem to notice the dust motes dancing in the afternoon light much either. We used to. Used to notice everything.

This cardigan—itches sometimes, doesn’t it? A little bit if it’s too warm, or not enough if it’s a cool day. Comforting though, definitely comforting. This one has been with us since Prague, didn’t it? Feels right here, tucked under our skin. These glasses, too. Fine china, obviously, nothing too extravagant, never needed to be.

Heard him humming earlier, faintly. Something by Schubert, probably. Didn’ed notice until now, of course. Happens. So often. Wasnt up to anything, weren’t? Just…sitting. Comfortable chaos, usually. Maybe a touch too quiet, those days. But tonight feels different. More expectation, less acceptance.

A flicker of recognition in your eyes, there, yes? When you looked away for a second during the argument three weeks ago. Silly thing, that. Simple really, hadn’t we agreed? One smallness, one missed opportunity... Now, don’t stare. Too obvious. Let’s just sit here. And see."

Now, let us know your thoughts! Do you agree with our interpretation of the scene? Which element resonated most – the clothing, the gaze, the subtle details?
