The wool feels scratchy tonight, doesn't it? Not bad, not necessarily - it used to be so comforting, didn't it? This particular shade of grey…a muted heather, like those evenings after the rain when everything smelled of damp earth and possibility. Though lately, it feels more like dust, doesn't it? Dust motes dancing in the sliver of light spilling from the window, oblivious to the quietness of it all.

And you. There. Watching, aren't you? A slight tilt of the head, perhaps, almost hesitant. Like you weren't entirely sure you should be. It's been ages, hasn’t it? Longer than these shoes have known their way to the back of the closet – worn around the heel, naturally, but still recognizable. These boots were his mother’s, after all. Simple things, simple comforts.

We haven’t spoken much, really. Justed the rustle of silk against velvet last time, which was nice. Until then, mostly silence. Comfortable enough silence, for years. Until it wasn't. That argument... over tea, of course. Overly perfect, too many biscuits. Now there' that sense, isn’t there? The memory of it hanging suspended, delicate and brittle.

See us here, then? Settle back into the stillness. Maybe a little weary, certainly a touch skeptical. Aren’t we always? We do love our routines, don’t we? Especially this one.

Your eyes flickered past ours earlier, remember? Didn’t quite catch the hint of wine in our glass, though. Or maybe did. Did you notice the trace of rouge on our cheeks? And look, a smile, a flicker of recognition in our gaze.

It's okay if you're unsure. It's easy to be unsure. It has been, hasn’t it? Almost twenty years since he went, after all. So, go ahead. Keep watching. Let the feeling settle. Perhaps, just possibly, you think we wanted you to.”

Now, about that glance...

What do you think? Does it capture the mood? Would love any feedback!
