(The tweed feels familiar, doesn’t it? A bit scratchy today, perhaps. It always does when we’re not quite sure if it’s our time to shine.)

“There.” That’s the third time you’ve adjusted your spectacles this afternoon. Not a bad job, really. They were threatening to slide off entirely after that disastrous potluck last month—your mother made those dreadful Brussels sprouts again, didn't she? Green ones, stubbornly refusing to listen. We shouldn't have worned her about them so obviously, should we?”

(A trace of amusement plays around the corners of our mouth, despite ourselves. This has been a while, hasn’t it? Ten years since ‘The Break’. Or was it eleven? )

"Your hand’s stilling a little high, isn't it? Like you weren’t entirely convinced we wouldn’t notice. Silly thing to be shy about, actually. The light was lovely then, remember? Just past the rose bushes by the gate. And the scent… a hint of woodsmoke and summer rain."

(Our gaze drifts out the window for a beat, almost imperceptibly, towards the garden. We haven’,t stepped foot outside these walls in ages).

“Not many people know it’s all still there, though, does it? Our world. All ours. Little overgrown lately, granted. Maybe too much quiet. Too few footsteps other than ours.”

(Turn back. Look at you. There’s a flicker of something there, doesn’t there? Recognition maybe? Or perhaps just a touch of apprehension…)

“Don’t look so surprised. It’s been a long time coming, hasn’t it? To admit it might be nice, don’t think about it too hard... Now, about those Brussels sprouts…”
