Here’s the Monologue:

The woollen shawl feels familiar tonight, doesn’t it? Not comfortable, not yet, certainly not - there wasn't much comfort ever really. It’s more…expected. Likeed to be draped around us then, isn’t always, this shawl. A little worn, of course. Always was, didn’t it? This dress too. A touch threadbare about the cuffs now, hadn't you noticed? Nothing dramatic, nothing that mattered truly, except maybe when the rent came due. And he would smile, wouldn’t he? That easy, knowing smile. Now that was something.

We haven't spoken properly in weeks, has it been? Weeks since the last time we bothered to ask which way was up, anyway. The scent of rain still hangs in the air, faint though it is—rain that followed that disastrous picnic by the lake, remember? When the wine spilled, and his father gave him such an opinionated look. Heh.

You’re staring, aren'lyou? Not a terrible stare, not exactly. More... hesitant. As if you don’t quite believe we recognize each other. Well, who could blame you? It’s been ages. Probably longer than should have been. Did you think we’d forgotten all about you, then? Or perhaps, were we afraid to admit it, weren’t sure we wanted to be reminded.

That’s why the gaze is so interesting, isn't it? Thisched, almost shy. Maybe you saw the flicker of recognition in my eyes then, after years of denial. After the husband, the children, the dutiful smiles given to everyone else’s guests. Now look at you again. See that hint of curiosity? Go ahead, take a closer look. Just don't reach out quite yet.”
