The wool’s a little scratchy tonight, isn't it? Nothing new – it always was, really, this slight prickle against the skin. Like memory itself. We haven’t quite defined it here, haven’t needed to, not yet. Just the quiet. It’s a nice enough quiet, usually. A comfortable absence of noise, compared to all the racket we used to make.

See that button on the cuff, the one that's ever so gently undone? That’s been there for years, hasn’t it? Ever since that evening, when he argued about the wine being too dry. Silly thing, wasn't it? Such big fuss over such a small detail. Everyone has their details.

You’re staring, aren’t you? Not overtly, nothing dramatic. More like you were then, back then – hesitant. Bit wary. As if you think you might be doing something wrong, standing here with your boots by the fireplace, smelling faintly of woodsmoke and stubbornness. Which, of course, we were. Always a bit stubbornly ourselves.
