Here we go...

“There.” That’s usually when it starts to fray around the edges, doesn’t it? When you start to notice. A slight shift in posture – not quite so rigid these days, perhaps - a little more willing to let the light catch the dust motes dancing in the afternoon sun. It hasn’t been all gloom, haven't them? Not entirely. This cashmere coat was a good find, wasn't it? Feels soft enough, though sometimes it feels like armor too, doesn't it? Like our armor used to.

The scent of rain still hangs in the air, faint but there – remember that evening by the lake? The one where you almost said ‘yes’. Almost. Now, years later, the memory isn't always blurry, which is nice. Though sometimes the sound of the waves gets a bit much, doesn’t it? Too many echoes.

We don’t speak very often, do we? Just…observation mostly. Your gaze drifts back then, inevitably catches ours. And then this, then. These eyes. We know each other, obviously. Always had, even if we didn’t admit it. A flicker of recognition, maybe a touch of resentment for the way things fell apart – or did that happen after? After the children were born, probably. Lessed than perfect, those kids weren’ t really ours, were they?

That slight turn of the lip, hadn’t noticed that until now. Is that a hint of amusement? Or simply resignation? Doesn’t matter, does it? Not tonight. Tonight, it’s quiet. Mostly. Maybe this time, when you finally say something—or less likely, when you don't —we won’t be afraid.

Just watch us, then. Watch us breathe. Watch us look back."

To help with future monologues, consider the details in the original image – the grey wool skirt, the delicate silver necklace, the subtly turned-up nose... They might give us clues about the mood! 😊
