The cashmere feels soft tonight, doesn’t it? Not too soft – not to invite too much, anyway. It’s been a while since we noticed if it was soft, hasn't it? Just accepted it was, quietly so, against the chill. Like most things these days, really. This skirt, a little bit too dark perhaps - navy blue always felt a touch dramatic, even then. A slight defense, wouldn't you say? Against the light, certainly, but maybe also…against us.

There wasn’t a fanfare when he arrived, no rush for that. More a hesitant step across the room, a flicker of recognition in his eyes – did he actually see us, or were we just expecting him? He’s wearing grey now, of course. Always favoured a good grey sweater. So familiar. Almost comforting.

He’s watching us, isn’t he? That quiet observation, like a hunter with nothing to lose. Doesn’t quite look sure why we’re here either, sometimes. Or maybe does. Maybe he remembers. The scent of rain on summer nights, the way the wine used to taste redder than it should have. A laugh that sounded brighter, lessensed by time.

See, there' and there’. The trace of that argument last week – didn’t blame us, not entirely. Too busy blaming ourselves, mostly. Didn’t say it enough, though. Did we?

This gaze of yours... curious. Slightly wary. We haven't needed to do anything drastic, have we? Just stand here, in this comfortable silence, wrapped in layers, feeling vaguely guilty about everything and perfectly content all at once.

Now, smile. Not too wide, don’t want to scare him off again. And look at us, for one brief moment, without wondering what went wrong.”
