The cable knit feels scratchy tonight, doesn’t it? Not unpleasant, not entirely - familiar scratchiness, like a well worn memory. It hasn’t been that long, has it? Five years? Feels more like five lifetimes ago when the rain didn't always smell faintly of woodsmoke. We haven’t said ‘hello’ yet, of course. That’s the funny thing about things, isn’t it? They don't need to be said. We know when they do.

There was tea last Thursday, remember? Just us, a little too much Earl Grey, your mother hadn’t turned up. A nice quiet evening then, for almost – nearly - everything. Until she did. Your sister, all bright eyes and perfectly placed hair, subtly suggesting we weren’t quite enough without her, wasn’t it? Like a particularly stubborn smudge on a perfect painting.

And now you’re here. All hesitant angles, a slight frown furrowing those brows of yours – nothing obvious, no, nothing that would suggest the silent question behind your gaze. Are you wondering why we still live here? The house is lovely, if a bit draughty these days. And you were good with the garden, generally. Remembered to water the ferns, most times.

Here. Look at our hands. Perfectly poised, aren' so close you might knock them over, but tight enough...almost. There, a flicker of recognition in your smile when the sunlight caught the fringe of your eyelashes yesterday. Did you notice?

It’s probably nothing, really. Maybe you simply wanted to see if we had remembered to put away the silver. But then again, maybe you noticed something else. Something lingering beneath the carefully cultivated aloofness. This particular stillness, perhaps.

This look at you, after all. More curious than critical. Less expectation than hope. Don’t move, then. Stay there. Let the silence settle, thick and comfortable. Now, breathe."
