“There.” That’s usually when it starts to fray around the edges, isn’t it? The façade – the perfectly pressed linen shirt, always white, though sometimes tonight there’s a hint of grey creeping in. It wasn’t that bad last time, not really. Just...a little bit of rain, perhaps. And a rather loud argument about the peonies - were theyfined, or simply neglected? Doesn’t matter much now, does it? Not anymore.

Your eyes are dry today, for one thing. Which is nice. We used to spend so many moments staring into each other’s souls, didn’t we? Like these eyes, anyway. A little wary, certainly. Always been a touch wary ever since...well, everyone has their theory. Maybe it was the wine. Or maybe it was the way he favored his father’s sidekick all those years ago.

This shawl, for instance. Cashmere, naturally. Comforting, if a little prickly. Felt like home, once upon a time. Now it’s more obligation than joy, doesn't it? Feels a little heavy, don’t think anyone noticed.

We haven’ the had words in ages, of course. Mostly silent observation lately. Your fingers trace the edge of the table with a familiar restlessness, almost like you remember when they did back then. Almost.

Now look at us. Slightly awkward. Perhaps a little hopeful. Did you notice the faint smile playing on our lips? Possibly. Probably.

It hasn’t been an easy few decades, has it? But who expected it to be, exactly? So go ahead, breathe deep. Take a chance. He probably won't notice if you shift closer."
