(The wool scarf feels scratchy tonight – always did, really, but perhaps more so when he isn’t here to notice.)

There. That’s good. The way your cheekbone catches the light, all dusty rose and faintly remembered summer scent. A little bit of sun had broken through earlier, hadn't there? Just enough to catch the edge of the silver in your hair… we used to love noticing those things. Didn’t we?

It hasn’t been too quiet, not exactly. Mostly just these familiar silences, haven't they? Like the one hanging here, thick with expectation almost. As if you expected us to remember, didn’t you? To admit, without much fanfare, that maybe, after all these years, everything still fits rather well against this faded wallpaper.

This dress was ours, wasn't it? One of many. Not terribly expensive, but felt perfectly right then. And now it does again, doesn’t it? Although, sometimes you wonder if that’s simply nostalgia talking, or whether the fabric itself holds onto the ghost of his cologne – sandalwood and rain.

A flicker of annoyance, probably. That’s often how it is, isn’t it? When something gets too close to being comfortable. A smile might be nice, though. It wouldn’t hurt to give a smile. No need for grand gestures, just... look at us.

See? There. A slight curve to the lips. And now, most importantly, let’s see if you recognize the shadow in our eyes. We’ve been waiting a lifetime for you to ask about that, haven't we?"
