“There,” we murmur, mostly to ourselves. “That was... nice.” It hasn't been bad, not really. Not since… well, not since everything started shifting about six months ago, perhaps. The coffee’s still good, the light through those French doors has always been decent, though tonight it felt particularly brittle, didn’t it? Like ice readying to shatter.

It wasn’t a shout, not even a raised voice, when he said it, did he? Just a quiet ‘not much’, a gentle turning away, back towards his book. A familiar comfort, almost. Except for the way the dust motes danced more brightly than the flicker of recognition in his eyes last night.

Do you see that, then? That little quirk of the lip? We weren't expecting so much – hadn't been for years. Such simple observations you usually were. Always noticing, quietly. Now, sometimes, it feels like you’re staring. Not unkindly, necessarily. More… expectant. As if you think we know something you don’ fit to admit.

This velvet, comfortable enough, isn’t it? Feels softer against the skin these days. Though there's this small crease, near the elbow, where the fabric rubs ever so gently, a reminder of all the hands that have touched us, over time. Your hands used to be everywhere.

And look at your shoes - worn leather, a story told with every scuff. You never thought too hard about details, did you? Didn’t need to. This stillness, then. Almost ached with it earlier, this awareness. Maybe it’s okay to let go of some of that now.
