Here we go...

“Another glass too many for him, perhaps,” I murmur, more to myself than ever. The ice has been settling nicely on this tumbler since he left – fifteen minutes ago, maybe twenty - though ‘left’ feels generous sometimes. More likely, we simply drifted apart during a particularly well-placed argument about which shade of grey best suited the living room. This dress, at least, doesn’t argue. A little bit of a risk with the deep teal velvet – felt a touch flamboyant after all those years of muted greys and quiet sighs. It was his mother’s, wasn’t it? Or ours? Memory’s a slippery thing, isn’t it?

The light caught her hair perfectly when she wore it, didn’t it? Like captured starlight. That’s why we liked it so much, really. Not necessarily her, not always. Just…that feeling. Now there’s just us and the faint scent of woodsmoke and something vaguely familiar – could be the wine, could be nostalgia.

And youre staring, aren’t you? A hesitant gaze, mostly. Like you weren’t entirely sure you should be here, back then. Like you were afraid of being noticed, of catching us off guard. Which is fair. We were rather messy, weren’t we? All that laughing, all that arguing, all that love, often disguised beneath a carefully constructed wall of polite indifference.

See, that’s the tricky part. See if you’re brave enough to look too closely. Did you hear the way we used to sigh when the rain fell? Didn’t think anyone else did. It’s alright to let yourself remember. And don’ed hesitate too long.”
