“Right then.” It’s always “right then,” isn't it? Like we haven’t been doing this for nearly ten years. Or perhaps he thinks we have. He never quite admits it was our fault, not really. Not without a grumble about too many nights out, or maybe not enough home. That’s him being subtle, of course. Always has been.

Feel the wool against your skin, don't you? This cardigan, it used to be his mother's, probably. That comforting weight, familiar comfort… except sometimes it feels more restrictive than warm. Just like everything lately.

Your eyes were narrowed when you walked in, weren', t they? Which wasn’t entirely surprising. More curious than annoyed, though. Maybe even… hopeful. We both know the bottle hasn’t dried yet – a little dusty, certainly, but still good vintage Cabernet. Did you notice the way the sunlight caught the dust motes dancing in the beam? Almost forgot, didn't we? Lost in thought, that is.

We had such beautiful arguments, remember those? Fierce, passionate, usually ended with us curled up together under a duvet, anyway. This feeling, then – this quietness – it’s similar to that, isn’t it? Less heat, less fury, just this gentle hum of something needing to break through.

Almost spilled the wine there, didn’t we? Little bit of red on the rug, nothing disastrous. Just like life, really. Often messy, often lovely.
