The woollen scarf is scratchy tonight, hasn't been for years - probably when he wasn't around to notice. This grey cardigan, well, it’s comfortable enough. Familiar, certainly. A little worn, perhaps too many times over the last decade or so. Itches sometimes, that feeling, doesn’t it? Like a memory trying to break free.

Your eyes were dry yesterday, weren’t they? Just a hint of dryness. Likeed it better when they used to sparkle, back when...well, most likely when he was still drinking. That particular scent of woodsmoke and quiet desperation always hung about us then, didn’t it? And the way the light caught his hair.

Now there’s only the dust motes dancing in the late afternoon sun, drifting through the windowpanes, barely noticed. We haven’t spoken much since she asked about the gardenias – which, admittedly, everyone said we did well with them. Always loved those gardenias.
