Here goes…

“Another glass too many for him, perhaps,” I murmur, more to myself than you. The light’s good tonight, though, isn't it? This one always was, even when he wasn’t quite here. See the way it catches the fringe of the silk - not flashy, not showy, just enough. Eighties, naturally. He loved his eighties. And these boots...well, they were comfortable. Comfortable until they weren’t. They certainly aren’t today. Feels like ages since we actually felt anything other than vaguely resigned, doesn't it? “Almost” happy, everyone said. Almost.”

We haven’t spoken much all evening. Justed smiles across the room during Auntie Ruth's inevitably rambling anecdote about her prize-winning dahlias, a perfectly acceptable amount of polite distraction. But there’s been a stillness lately, hasn't there? Not necessarily bad – less dust then, fewer arguments mostly. Though, those were entertaining.

Now, your eyes. A little hesitant, definitely curious. Like you don’t entirely remember which side to root for. Did you notice the slight tightening around your mouth when she mentioned the dahlias? We didn’t. Or did we? Probably not. It happens.

It's funny, isn’t it? How easily things can slip away. Like smoke. Beautiful, shimmering smoke, but still, gone.

There’! That flicker of recognition in your gaze. Maybe that’s why you came. To remind us, after all these years. So, go ahead. Take our picture. Let’s see if we still recognize ourselves, amongst the lace and the lingering scent of cedarwood perfume. Go on—a bit bolder, then.”
