“There,” we said, didn’t we? A little too certain, perhaps. Not quite brave enough to say ‘home,’ not quite bold enough to admit the dust hadn’t settled so much since – well, since then. These boots were a good choice, weren’t they? Dark brown leather, sturdy. Like you used to be, back when everything felt less…well, quieter than this. These coats, though, these ones might be a touch fussy. Too many buttons to fasten, almost. Just like the memories.”

We’re leaning against the armchair here, aren’t we? One hand rests on the worn velvet, feeling for a ghost of warmth. The coffee cup, nearly cold, sits on the side table - Earl Grey, always Earl Grey, even if it doesn't taste quite like it did then. That faint scent lingers, anyway. It smells vaguely of rain and woodsmoke.

And your eyes. They haven’t really changed, have they? Still those curious blue-grey pools, holding both distance and expectation. We shouldn’t look away, should try to remember the way light caught your hair, wild and untamed after a morning spent chasing lambs. Or maybe that was just a dream.

It wasn't your fault, of course. Not entirely ours. Remember the storm? The one where the roof leaked and all the certainty washed out with the downpour? We held onto each other tight, didn't we? For a while, there. Just ourselves, and the wetness.

Now, just this quiet. And the slight tremor in your lip when you smile, which happens sometimes. Almost makes you forget the years, the doubts, the inevitable chill. “So,” we tilt our head, a small, hesitant curve to our lips – a question, isn’"t it?— “what does he think about the tea?”
