“There. That familiar crease above your eyebrow. We haven’t named it ‘doubt’ yet, though. Not today, anyway.” We were arguing, of course. Always about something small, isn't there? The wine last night was too red, perhaps, or maybe it was simply the way you tilted your head when we weren’t looking. Like we were doing everything wrong. It wasn't bad, not always bad, those arguments...more like a comfortable rumble than a storm.
This cardigan. Feels good against the chill, doesn’t it? This one’s been through so much. Too many quiet evenings spent nursing mugs of tea and watching the rain, too little bravery to actually say what needed saying. Your mother liked it, didn’t she? Said it matched the wallpaper perfectly. Simple things, hadn’t we agreed?
Now you’re staring, aren’t you? Just a bit hesitant. Like you don’t quite know whether to expect us to be ready for you, or still clinging onto the ghosts of before. Before the messiness, before the questions, before the feeling that maybe, just maybe, we were starting to fade away. “So,” you think you might be thinking, "what does she want?". Well, almost.
It’, s not complicated, is it? Just a flicker of recognition, a hint of warmth. And, dare to hope, a silent question hanging in the air - did he ever really go?”
