Not badly worn, mind you – well-loved. This coat, well, this is cashmere, obviously, though you wouldn’t necessarily notice if you weren’t looking closely enough. We haven’tesseded that in ages.

It’s been…well, hasn't it? A little while since last time, didn’t it? That awkward hug at Christmas felt rather decisive, all things considered. More silent than most lately, these days. Less quietening, more of a gentle pushing back. Which isn't always bad, is it? Too much noise can be exhausting.

You’re staring, aren't you? Not a terrible stare, exactly. Just a curious one. Like you might when you remember something. Or maybe when you don’t quite understand why we were arguing about the fern three months ago. It probably shouldn't matter, should it? He loved the ferns.

Your eyes—they used to catch ours easily, didn't they? Now there’, a slight hesitation. A flicker of recognition mixed with a touch of trepidation. Are you wondering if we still recognize each other? If we dared to hope, once, that maybe things hadn’t completely faded away.
