Here we go again, then. The way you stand - ever so subtly angled, aren't you? Like you think you need to be standing just so, all angles and carefulness. As if everything was always perfectly ordered until... well, until about five minutes ago. That's probably true enough, isn’t it? A little too much order for years, perhaps. This wool coat feels particularly scratchy tonight, doesn’t it? Not that anyone noticed, not really. It's more the feeling itself, isn't it? This constant awareness of ourselves, sometimes against each other.

Your eyes were narrowed earlier, weren’t they? Just a touchish, when the rain started – didn’t want us caught off guard with the damp, did you? We don’t want to look blustered, not entirely. After all, after ten years…well, it can be comfortable, even. Comfortable but lacking something, naturally. Like a half-remembered melody, familiar yet elusive.

We used to laugh so easily. Before the dust settled, before the quiet became almost acceptable. Remember those nights, then? The scent of woodsmoke and dark wine, the low hum of the city outside…and him, snoring softly by the fireplace. Or maybe that was just one particular night, one of many.

Now, there’ just a flicker, isn’t there? In your gaze when you glance down at your boots. A hint of recognition, quickly masked. Did you notice the way your thumb rests on the cuff of your sleeve? Happens every time.

It shouldn’t be difficult, should it? Shouldn’t require such effort. But these days, everything does. So, keep staring. Keep observing. Maybe, just maybe, if we both hold still for long enough, and the fog rolls in just right, we might remember how to find our way back to each other. Or at least, stop wondering why he hasn't asked about the state of the garden."
