(A slight exhale, the silk of the scarf brushing against the cable knit sweater.)

“There.” That’s a good enough light today, isn't there? Not too harsh, not too much shadow. We haven’t had quite so many shadows since... well, since then. It feels like ages ago, doesn't it? Like when the rain didn’t always smell of damp wool and quiet resentment. It was his mother who suggested these photos, remember? Said we needed ‘a little life.’ A bit cloying, wasn't it? Still, she paid, hadn’t she?”

(A small turn of the head, towards the edge of the window).

"Your eyes were a bit wide then, weren't they? A touch startled by the grey London drizzle. We both were, after all. Everyone was, really - after that mess. Did you think we’d forgotten about the wine, perhaps? The one with the almost perfect Merlot notes?"

(A subtle adjustment of the shawl around the shoulders, feeling the soft texture beneath the fingers - a comfort found in familiar things.).

"Not bad, though, this pose. A hint of defiance, certainly. Not entirely brittle, not yet. Just...observant. Which is important, isn’ed it? Always has been. This dress – felt brave to wear it tonight, didn't it? Too bold for the garden party, maybe, but no point in being afraid, is there? Not if he’s actually here.”

(Turns back to face the viewer, a flicker of something more than indifference in the eye – a trace of hope mixed with reluctance).

“So, what do you say? Do you want to look away? Or are you willing to admit, even just for a moment, that perhaps, just perhaps, everything hasn’t completely fallen apart? Just don't blink."
